Why do so many image hosts fail?

So I've been looking through the showcase section here and noticed that most of those posted are no longer live. I've also seen on forums where people have promised their image host is up to stay but is no longer there.

So what do you think are the reasons that so many image hosts fall by the wayside?

Because of the same reason a blog fails or any other website. You need to be working on it not just install a script and let it be.

Could the main reason be they are difficult to monetize? From reading threads on other forums there seems to be a general consensus that CPC pays so little and CPM is very hard to get accepted.

Well, if helps V3 will have better ads monetizing options.

Yes, that's the main reason.
