Browser shouldn't be a issue. Try to install the latest flash player.
 
I'm afraid that I can't solve this because I can't reproduce the problem because I don't have a machine with Ubuntu to test this.

This only happens with local upload? it happens with remote upload?
 
Can you please confirm that this happens to both remote and local upload?
 
Flash on linux and mac can't send images with extra characters _- Try sending filename.png Sometimes first upload don't work, so send file for second time 😀

This is false as for the mac part... I often upload files with non-alphanum characters...

And I will setup a vm of ubuntu tp test this as soon as possible.
 
Then is a uploadify error or a swfupload error. This could be long...
I will check this plugins but is impossible to tell now if this has solution or not.
