Unable to upload profile image/background image

I'm unable to upload profile image as well as profile backgrounds. The loading spin just stays on forever without any progress. Normal image uploading is working fine without any errors.

I've read similar thread here : http://chevereto.com/community/threads/cant-upload-user-image.4325/

But it seems I' having a different issue. Php error log shows the following entries:

[Mon Apr 21 23:13:37 2014] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] $destination /home/sitename/public_html/content/images/users/L is not a dir, referer: http://sitename.com/settings/profile
