Switching to ssl once logged in or signing up

How do we go about switching users to a secure connection once they are logged in or are signing up? I really don't want to encrypt the entire site, so I am assuming there is a way to do this which is typical of almost any site or script.

I don't see why you don't want to secure all the website. Is sort of a mandatory thing in our days so why enable it in some cases and in others don't enable it?

In computing a little byte doesn't make a difference at all and http vs https performance is not something inherent to the specific protocol, there are a lot of things that can mix up to give you better/worse results using https or not like how busy is the ssl port and things like that.

What I mean is that this kind of optimization is useless at this time because it can be barely measured and if you can go with https go with https is better for the end user.
