Site down. Seems like a hosting issue (arvixe), not sure.

Hello,

My site (shmoopic.com) has been mostly down for the last three days. Every once in a while a page will successfully load. I have no idea what the issue is and Arvixe has not responded to any of my emails, support tickets, or phone calls (I'm not a fan).

The server it's hosted on is not down. I access the site through the cPanel or FTP. When I run a test, it seems that the HTTP port is open as well, so I'm not sure what the deal is.

The most recent change that I made was enabling compression in the cPanel in order to speed the site up. It seemed fine the night I made the change, so it might be unrelated.

Does anybody have any ideas before I switch hosting providers?

Cheers,
RDM

Hi RDM,

I'm very sorry for what is going on. It seems that there is a server issue affecting some Arvixe customers and at this time I'm collecting all the data that I can to make them easier to find a solution ASAP.

Can you indicate me your website to add it to my website monitor service?

Cheers,
Rodolfo.

Sometimes I get this error as well:

Chevereto error: Internal Server Error

If the server even responds.

I see your website working, and the error log just show a PHP < 5.4 issue. Do you still have issues?

No, now the site is up and blazing fast. But I'm still waiting for an explanation and a response from Arvixe...

Thank you for looking into it though. I appreciate your responsiveness!

Hi Rodolfo,

Now my site is redirecting to Chevereto's install page for some reason. http://www.shmoopic.com

...Should I reinstall?

Also, Arvixe support got back to me this morning and agreed to refund my last two months of hosting.

Seems your site is not connecting to database... try to find out the reason, and if it doesn't exist... restore it from one of your backups.

Thanks. I reached back out to Arvixe support. I assume it has something to do with their database issues since I haven't changed anything. I'll probably hear back in a week. Do you use Arvixe? How do they get away with such spotty service?

You should check if the database is there or not. If the system is redirecting to install is because there is DB connection but the database is empty.

I did not experience much of Arvixe or the sites I host with them are not that active... So I can't say about it.

BUT this happens with most of the hosts where I tried basic or starter hosting packages.

It does appear to be there. If I go to phpMyAdmin, I can export the full database with historical user data, settings, etc. I assume that means that the database is still there?

Yes, you should edit app/settings.php to point to the right database.

I don't see anything wrong, but I'm not sure what to look for. db_host and db_name appear to be correct. Are the contents of this file sensitive? Can I post them here?

Arvixe support did specifically say that there were problems with MySQL in their email this morning. But they said that the issue had been resolved.

Seems to be a MySQL server issue. I can't connect to the server and I've enabled the full error report and I'm getting this:

Fatal error [400]: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] No such file or directory
Triggered in /lib/G/classes/class.db.php at line 119

Stack trace:
#0 /lib/G/classes/class.db.php(130): G\DB->__construct()
#1 /app/loader.php(42): G\DB::getInstance()
#2 /index.php(20): include_once('/app/loader.php')

That is a MySQL error that is saying that there is something wrong with the MySQL socket settings, which is something that is configured at server layer.
