Just a quick note on organization first: the subscriptions feature is planned for V6, not V5, so I've moved your comment out of the V5.0.0 announcement thread to keep things tidy for future reference.
On the actual question: I'd rather not describe it as "the same system as XenForo." It's not that XenForo's approach is bad, it's that committing to "same" up front would box the feature into matching someone else's implementation detail-for-detail, rather than being designed around what makes sense for Chevereto.
Happy to share more specifics on direction as V6 development gets closer.
