php 5.4 reached end of life on 3 Sep 2015, if your host refuses to update i suggest you search for another one.

Yup, 5.3 is way too old and 5.4 is also old so I don't see why so many providers are stuck with 5.3. If your provider doesn't add more newer versions then is time to move on.
