Thanks for the rapid reply, but the question has to do with the fact that going to: https://chevereto.com/community/threads/random-home-cover-background-image.5912/ results in the message "Chevereto Community - Error - You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action."

Is that a function of using the free edition, or due to my being a new user here or...?

It is because free users don't get access to that area. The system now includes that feature in every edition so you don't need to code anything on your own.

The instructions in the link you posted should be considered obsolete.

By the way, in current editions is easy as click and upload into Dashboard > Settings > Homepage
