Block PORN! Set specific images to be displayed on main page?

It would be great to be able to select what images are approved to be displayed to the public on the main page. This would cut down on porn being displayed to kids or people who don't want to see that on a professional image hosting site.

If a guest uploads an image he or she will be able to see the initial hot link then it would go into a que for review to be displayed on the main page.

Just some thoughts... There has to be a way to combat porn on the main page without disabling guest uploads and blocking new registrations.

Hi Rodolfo, any chance this could be implemented? Or something like it... If not I would be willing to pay to have it custom coded, I'm sure others feel the same way.

There is no way to monetize this script with Google ad words with the off chance that porn will be posted to the main page. As it stands, it's useless to me right now. The script is amazing but I have to be able to control whats being displayed on the main page, that's where I plan on adding Google ads.

Instead of control what is displayed you should control what is uploaded. Google is very sensitive with the content of a website and if you want to put adsense do you job and moderate the content.

Okay so your not going to help? That's a stupid comment about moderating content. I have run some of the largest sites on the net including a PR7 forum with over 300K members, it's IMPOSSIBLE to moderate every single post. This script is useless as it stands, EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE including you will have loads of PORN!!! Look at your own live demo. Not very professional to have porn plastered all over it.

I'm not trying to be rude... Hell I even offered to pay you to fix your porn issues lol.

Impossible? So what exactly you think that youtube, tumblr, imgur and other sites do? Sorry but if you want to use AdSense then you should tweak your site to be in the AdSense game. For instance not allow guest uploads, moderate what thing is posted, banning IP on the server layer, etc. By simply asking for an account to upload you are reducing a lot all the malicious images that people could upload but still you need to go there and manage your content. How do you think that Google finds that your AdSense is not being used properly? They do manual inspection, I've a couple of friends which everyday moderate their classified websites because this is the internet and people love to think that they can do anything like post porn pictures, drugs, etc. So they have to moderate the website because if they don't care for the content no one will do.

Even if you place a button where people can tell if the image is SFW/NSFW you still can't rely on that. Google hates the automated websites with no moderation, it also hates the websites with bad content so like I said, do your job or else don't use AdSense. There are several networks that will suit you but they will pay less because those are for websites with lower quality. Basically if you want AdSense then be ready to moderate because Google wants quality, not quantity.

My advice is that you should use another ad network. You won't need to moderate and they will pay you anyway.

Actually the problem is not the AD network but it's not professinal show adult images on main page of the website. You know it. Let's wait about a TEMP fix, for now i simple disabled the images on home page.

:)

I offered to pay to fix it, even an option to stop unregistered users from being able to post images on the main page would help. I can assure you this will be a HUGE problem for EVERYONE... not just me. Blocking unregistered users from using the script will drive them away. NONE of the other image hosting sites (the big ones) allow guest users to post images to the main page. I am sure this will be addressed when enough people complain.

Rodolfo, PLEASE don't feel like I don't appreciate your amazing script. I do and you have done amazing work but PLEASE help us combat this porn issue with a few simple options to block guests from being able to post images to the main page.

The script comes with the tools to make custom listings you only need to play around with it. The current step of the project is make it stable and fix all the bugs that appears everyday. I won't code any additional features unless we reach a mature initial release and in my large list of concerns this is not even in my #10 list.

The script default theme is not designed to be a final production theme. Is a base where you can add, remove and extend things. Default theme is about to show everything that the application can do, not fit specific needs. That has been done in this way so you can tweak and extend using real code not just useless examples. This was the same thing as Chevereto 2 and it will be the same for Chevereto 4, 5, etc. That is why it has a theme engine so you can make it your own.

If you don't want to show anything in the main page you only need to design your own, you can do a nice landing page and forget all the explorer function which of course can be controlled at template level so you actually don't need me to do that. You can also remove the search function, or the random function. Indeed you can do anything you want that is why I spent a whole year making a system ready to be extended rather to be configured.

When you want something with Wordpress what you do? You get a theme, modify your own or you go to wordpress.org asking them to add what you want?

Chevereto default theme is a default theme. Not a final production theme.

You can't compare chevereto to worpress, wordpress has thousands of themes, a good documentation and many sites to learn.
Chevereto has nothing at the moment, that's why we ask for different things.

Agreed! I am just looking for a little direction.

I guess I can have one of my Indian developers redo the code for the front end.

If Cheverto features a self moderator feature, where the admin can hold images to approve before they get put onto a website that should be enough. Rodolfo is right to where you need to cover your own A$$ and decide im going to spend X amount of time approving images or higher someone.

People will upload all sorts of stuff if you let them. I know its not ideal, but it sucks when you are a small site with limited money and time.
Today where there are all web safe tools out there it only takes a few bad ratings and a good domain name will get tagged as bad.

I do think a temp fix might be something like a report option on the image so that on the SECOND or THIRD reporting of the image it will get flagged to be reviewed and hidden from view, but again that's only if people click it

I think that the thing that we need is a complete revision of the problem and the possible solutions. You should know that I really love the content quality (we do that for the homepage of Junkstr.com) and there are a lot of things to talk about this "block images" thing.

Lets agree that there are 3 reasons that may force you to block certain content:
  1. Illegal content (like copyrighted images, child pornography, mutilations and other kind of nasty things, etc).
  2. NSFW images (porn and related stuff, not illegal but is not comfortable to have them with the family safe photos)
  3. Ad network restrictions
The only case where you want to absolutely block the content is for the point 1. That content should be deleted on sight without any notice and you must be alert to delete that content and block users. But for points 2 and 3 the thing is a little more grey and that is content that shouldn't freely listed or have a certain flag that tell us if is correct or not to display it. Agreed?

Now, Chevereto 3 is a system that is still being developed. You may see that is released but that doesn't means that is finished, what I'm trying to say is that there are priorities and temporal implementations. For instance, at this very moment you can admin all the content so you have a way to get rid of the nasty things. We also have a way to manually create listings of any kind, customize how the system looks in every way and so on. So we have a basic tool to work, we are not naked in front of this need.

You may ask why I didn't put basic stuff like a report button or maybe moderator accounts and that is because you need the real world to test if those systems works or not, this is not matter of just put a solution is about put something that works. So let me do a quick review of all the options that I've contemplated (way before this topic was started):
  1. Auto detect bad images
This is a totally waste of time. There is no algorithm or image processing that can tell us certainly if an image is bad or not, where bad is a relative term. There are a lot of algorithms to detect faces, body parts, nipples, etc. But there is no algorithm in the world that can tell us the context of an image and that will lead you to false positives. Not even Facebook or Google has this technology and is a problem that is still being researched so for now there is absolute no option to automatic flag images.

  2. The report button
This is useful but you can't do an autopilot in this. In the past I've tough about a system with a threshold so if n>limit reports have been sent the system auto flag the image. In the practice sounds good but since the reports are made by your own visitors do this is not a reliable option. A report system will be included in future releases and it will be pretty standard and basic, just +1 a report counter and review these in the admin dashboard.

  3. Moderator accounts
This is something that could help you a lot because you can tell our friends or someone to actually moderate the content but this is also expensive. No one will do this for free unless this person works with you and in that case you already have the admin account. Moderator accounts could be added in future releases but not before the report button.

  4. Selective home display
This is what was originally asked in this topic and I believe that it could help a little bit but only to make look your site more nicer rather than actually control what you have in the site. If you at this very moment want to select which images should appear in the home you have to manually create that listing query and maybe disable the explorer tabs and the pagination. Just show for instance 12 handpicked images. I don't see that you should rely in configurable values to customize how your site looks, you should rely in programmatic solutions because those are cheaper to implement and they will address your need perfectly. Chevereto has settings like how the emails will be send or where and how the images will be uploaded. All the display needs should be addressed by custom coding, most of you don't see it but is right under you noose. The system is incredible flexible and it only needs that you play with it.

  5. Label images
This is something that will be added in the future so NSFW images will be labeled but this is done manually so if the person that uploads don't care about it then he will just not label anything. This helps but is not something in which you should rely.
Bottom line is that this topic is not pretty much about how to control the content quality. It was presented like that but actually this topic is "how can I do this without coding, I need it". Sorry, but that won't happen anytime soon. The system has the tools to do custom listing, add/remove tabs, add/remove pagination, add/remove etc, customize the complete look and feel, make the index an static page, change the album view, etc. The only thing that is missing here is that there is no documentation so there is no way to actually understand how to achieve basic modifications. Sadly but I will start to write the documentation only when the initial release gets to a mature release. You can still ask me how to play around with the classes and methods and I encourage you to do it.

Finally, if you want me to code a default theme with a complete set of configurable options then the script price will be huge because fill all the possible needs is nearly impossible. I understand that is the desirable thing for anyone but sadly it can't be achieved without loosing something, in this case if I code a more complex theme I will spent a lot of project resources and that means increase the prices. Even large software companies limit on how much things you can configure and is because of this very same issue, you can't fill all. For many of you me increasing the price is not a direct issue at all because you own lifetime licenses, but for the new customer means a higher price, which leads to lower sales and lower sales jeopardize the continuity of the project.

I think your ideas are great Rodolfo, however I honestly cant see how anyone is going to successfully run this script and make money without changing the way it works now to block the porn. I have a huge portfolio of sites and I make a decent amount from all the Google monetized sites we own. I can assure you, no one is going to get rich or make any decent money from an ad company that allows porn images. This is truly a simple fix, if your not willing to do it and the code is open to being changed I will have one of my developers do it. The fix to this is to not allow anyone to post images to the main feed. All images that show in the main feed must be approved by an admin in the CP. The great part of this is you don't have to baby sit your site everyday and remove bad images. All you have to do is pop on and add a few here and there.

Just so you guys know I run huge wallpapers sites, I average $700 a month on just one of my sites. I sold vistawallpapers.com for over $12K, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to making money of sites like this. I love the script but as it stands, I wont even advertise the site it's running on because I know as soon as it hits the main stream it will be flooded with BS porn and illegal shit.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but this script v 3.0 will never make money they way it is. What will happen is people will install it and they will get ban by there host for having porn on an image hosting site or they wont be able to keep up with the bandwidth leeches because the sites not making shit for money. Why because it can't be monetized, this is the truth and anyone with real knowledge on how these sites work and make money knows that.

Instead of adding moderator tools and things like that which needs time I will bundle the default theme with 2 different homepage alternatives, the default will be an static landing page and the other one will be the explorer.

To switch between these indexs you will need to simply rename the files.
