Ok, topic can be closed. The problem was that a few versions ago I had a custom version of the contact page and its basic version did not exist in the sql database. So I removed the current version of the contact.php page from the database and manually inserted an empty default record for the contact page with id 3 as in a freshly installed system and now it works.
