Unable to create upload folder

Just installed for the first time, but not able to upload even a small file.
It reads the file, looks like it's uploading, but says Unable to create upload folder

The folder is there, /images/ is 777 and it's creating temp_ files in that directory, but it just doesn't finish.
php uploads are allowed.

In the config file I've tried 'auto' and also the direct path for root_dir
 
The problem is that PHP can create files but it can't create dirs. Perhaps you can go to your hosting company and tell them that PHP can't create a folder in a 777 dir, they will understand ;)
 
I spoke to my host & they said they made the folder owner apache, but that still didnt help it.
