I got a similar problem and reloaded Version 4.3.7 using the downloaded zip file, uploaded to my server public_html and then unzipped musing the file manager in cpanel.
The database did not need to be restored.
You should always take your site temporarily offline, and backup the database, before doing an update.
I use the utilities cPanel and phpMyAdmin provided by my host plus FileZilla to upload files.

By the way. The last time I tried a manual update I kept getting problems with captcha thinking I was a robot. I don't know if that is a related problem or something else.
