Can anyone please advise if adding below mod expires to .htaccess file can help me save unnecessary image downloads from users end?

I have read in google that adding mod expires is a must!

Code:
<IfModule mod_expires.c>
    ExpiresActive On
    ExpiresDefault "access plus 1 seconds"
    ExpiresByType text/html "access plus 1 seconds"
    ExpiresByType image/gif "access plus 3456000 seconds"
    ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access plus 3456000 seconds"
    ExpiresByType image/png "access plus 3456000 seconds"
    ExpiresByType text/css "access plus 3456000 seconds"
    ExpiresByType text/javascript "access plus 3456000 seconds"
    ExpiresByType application/javascript "access plus 3456000 seconds"
    ExpiresByType application/x-javascript "access plus 3456000 seconds"
</IfModule>

On the face of it, yes, what you are suggesting for the .htaccess should work.

It can be affected by things overriding it, however, that would be down to your individual setup, so I couldn't really advise outside of saying that from a purely "code based view of what is written in the box", it is the correct way to achieve it.

Are you using a CDN (Cloudflare or MaxCDN)? They will have their own caching rules that will countermand anything you write in your .htaccess file.

Mod expires or any server side module won't have any effect in your external storage containers. For each one of your containers you must refer to their documentation in order to tweak those expires.
