If image doesn't exist, check second directory

My image directory is getting massive. What I'd like to do is setup a new /images directory and rename the old one to something like /images2. This is simple with an .htaccess rewrite/condition combo for direct image links, but the only issue is getting the php generated pages to work such as: www.domain.com/?v=image.png.

I would imagine that there would be something within the PHP code itself to get it to work but on lost on that part. :p

Any ideas on this one?
