If image doesn't exist, check second directory

My image directory is getting massive. What I'd like to do is setup a new /images directory and rename the old one to something like /images2. This is simple with an .htaccess rewrite/condition combo for direct image links, but the only issue is getting the php generated pages to work such as: www.domain.com/?v=image.png.

I would imagine that there would be something within the PHP code itself to get it to work but on lost on that part.

Any ideas on this one?

This will delete images that haven't been seen over a designated period in days.
