You can feature anything you want actually but is not a one click procedure. For example, you can clone route.index.php or actually any given route as /featured and choose what images will be displayed there. Again, "choose" means "custom code it".
I'm working in a new explorer for the next version, I will do something very similar to the old 500px explorer page, from there we could add more and more listings.
