Do i need to keep upgrading my chevereto?

I want to order a custom theme from someone that have never worked with Chevereto.

My question is:

If i stop upgrading chevereto, can i still be availble to patch bugs? Without touching the theme modifications? If i need to touch the theme modifications i would need to pay them for each update.

Is strongly recommended to always use the last release. Old themes work but in every update there are changes that if you don't apply it well it may break the theme (that is why I want to change the theme engine).
For instance, 2.3 will feature changes in the theme js, this means that if you just change the peafowl.php file and not update the theme the site will be broken., if you skip the theme changes on peafowl.php you will be ok.
