Localization of custom pages

Majen

In our 2.x version we localized our custom pages via language variables. Before we upgrade to 3.x, I tried to replicate the same in 3.4.5. It was no problem to create my own custom page (lets say imprint.php) and include a link in the header.php.

Unfortunately, the language files are not plain php files anymore. How can I add further language variables to the German and English language files? Is there any other possibility to localize custom pages in these two languages?
