Can't get the 2.2.3 update to work

I can't get the 2.2.3 update to work. I used 2 methods:

1: Replaced the affected files and folders for the 2.2.3 versions. Merged the new config.php file with my old config.php. after I upload includes/chevereto.php OR includes/classes I get a blank screen.
I've made some little modifications to my 2.2 site, so I thought there might be a conflict somewhere. So I decided to rebuilt my site:

2: I downloaded the 2.2.3 package, uploaded everything it in a sub-folder "223". Created a database "mysite223" and a db-user. Edited the config.php and definitions.php files and the , chmodded the "images" folder to 777. When I type http://mysite.com/223/ I get a blank screen and nothing happens, no database tables are created, nothing.

Do I do something wrong or is there a bug in the package?
