I get this when I try and update...

Undefined variable $license

is there anything I can do? or should I do a fresh install? I do have a paid license if this has something to do with that?

V3.X requires the license at app/license.php to perform update procedure. You are getting this error either because that file is missing or the value of the variable was tempered.

It will be better for you to manually provide the files from the most recent version in your website path.
