All these updates, making it longer for AUS. :'/

Nope. AUS sort of "hooks" the handler and use custom classes. So there isn't actually a delay because of minor releases (2.4 : major release | 2.4.X : minor release)

Ajax uploader means a system to upload using php (or any server side) + javascript instead of flash. And that will appear on 2.6

Yes, but what's better about it?

Flash is a technology which depends on a company called Adobe, which help the web to grow the last decade allowing anything from video sharing websites (youtube), online music players (grooveshark), games, etc. Problem with flash is that is old technology and there are better alternatives now. For instance, this is the list of problems of using a flash uploader:
  • Browser must have the flash plugin (iOS don't have flash player).
  • Flash runs the upload process as a separate client request which means that you have workaround the session ids.
  • Flash can't be fully customized because it runs compiled swf files. You can't easily style or change behaviors.
  • Flash depends on Adobe, which means that Adobe is complete free to add/remove flash functionalities that may affect your compiled swf file.
Don't take me wrong, flash can do a lot of things better than javascript but the technology allows us now to do without flash things and let us be more free to customize and develop. That's why the flash uploader must be changed for a JavaScript solution.
